Virtual reality and sensory evaluation context

Published application: Bellon et al. (2025), chapter 4, pp. 59–76.

Research question

How can an immersive visual environment and an olfactory stimulus contribute to the experience being evaluated?

Protocol

40 volunteers were divided into two groups of 20. Both experienced a virtual environment displaying food; one group additionally received vanillin odour. Subjective and physiological observations were collected.

Relevance and scope

The chapter provides an example of contextual and multisensory study design. This setup is not a universal validation of virtual reality as a substitute for real-world cosmetic use. An evaluation context should itself be investigated when it can affect the result.
